Reinforcements Arrive

Friday, May 6 2005

At 18:02:59 GMT (11:02:59 PDT) computer WD31488 returned to my blog.

At 18:03:49 WD31488 clicked on the link for my personal web page.  And were greeted with a tiled background identical to this site.

There are the following links on the left side of the page that look like this:

Jury Duty
Firearms Instruction
Air Travel With Firearms
Weapons on Passenger Planes
Self-Defense and Firearms
Civil Disobedience
The Jews In The Attic Test
National ID Card Fatal Flaws
Project Fireball

At 18:04:03 GMT WD31488 clicked on the link for my Jury duty.

At 18:04:20 GMT WD31488 clicked on the link for Project Fireball.

At 18:04:38 GMT WD31488 returned to my blog gallery and again looked at this image at 18:04:41 GMT:

At 18:05:05 WD31488 then went to my blog category of "Technology".

At 18:05:12 WD31488 viewed this post (which I deleted off from blog on May 18 even though news about this project is openly available on the I3P website) and it's comments:

What I'm working on and why

While in New Mexico last week this story came up.  I wouldn't have mentioned it except it's mostly all in the open and I don't have any classified knowledge of the subject.

... the United States arranged for the Soviets to receive intentionally flawed process control software for use in conjunction with the USSR's natural gas pipelines. Reed stated that "The pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines, and values was programmed to go haywire, after a decent interval, to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds." The result? A three-kiloton blast in a remote area of Siberia in 1982, which, only by some miracle, apparently didn't result in any deaths. (For context, the Halifax Fire Museum lists the massive 1917 Mont Blanc ship explosion in the Halifax Harbor at a force of 2.9 kilotons.)

Among other threats to our national security is the possibility that our critical infrastructure is remotely attacked.  One of the tasks I'm working on is to secure it so that is much less likely.  One of the oil refinery guys that talked to our group last week told us he was sitting on a bomb and would rather it didn't go off.  One also said he has literally stepped over a body on his way to the control panels to try and keep the rest of the plant from blowing up. They have an interesting enough job keeping their stuff from blowing up on it own without 'help' from people that want to attack us.  Therefore a bunch of us computer geeks are looking at what needs to be done to improve things.

Joe,

I respect your opinion immensely, but Bics and Group A Strepptococous is what is really going to bring things to a head.

Power plants, gower shlants; it's lighters on planes that is the real danger.

Get a hold of yourself man, and start recommending that the authorities spend their time making sure that no one is going to set a smelly pillow on fire with a Zippo.

"Be Not Afraid" (or stay safely paranoid like me),

Do I detect a symphony of sarcasm here?

Theoretical biometric vulnerability documented

People have been saying it would happen but this is the first time, to the best of my knowledge, it actually occurred:

Police in Malaysia are hunting for members of a violent gang who chopped off a car owner's finger to get round the vehicle's hi-tech security system.

The car, a Mercedes S-class, was protected by a fingerprint recognition system.

...

The attackers forced Mr Kumaran to put his finger on the security panel to start the vehicle, bundled him into the back seat and drove off.

But having stripped the car, the thieves became frustrated when they wanted to restart it. They found they again could not bypass the immobiliser, which needs the owner's fingerprint to disarm it.

They stripped Mr Kumaran naked and left him by the side of the road - but not before cutting off the end of his index finger with a machete.

Although there are lots of intelligent comments about this on the biometrics email list I am on there was one guy that said:

There is a simple solution to the problem of having your finger cut off to fool the sensor - don't drive your Mercedes in Malaysia.

This guy has a severe case of cranial rectum inversion.

At 18:34:07 GMT WD31488 returned to my personal web site, JoeHuffman.org, and viewed my web page on how airplane passenger screening is a failure.  This web page was based entirely on publicly available Government Accounting Office reports and other entirely open sources.  I have not had access to any restricted information about airplane security.  There is something very odd about this particular viewing.  It was not referred from any other web page.  WD31488 did not get to it by clicking on links on my web page or via a search engine unless WD31488 typed it in.  WD31488 might have clicked on a link in email or they might have typed it in by hand as someone read it to them.  I suspect it was someone that didn't like me and/or my politics and "informed" on me.

At 19:07:42 GMT a new computer arrived on the scene and visited my blog.  This computer is named PUCK.  In addition to the posts seen by WD31448 two days earlier PUCK saw these posts:

Jason has update his web site with links to pictures and some more videos from Boomershoot 2005.

Kim didn't get the Horizon Air job

In all the stress of Boomershoot 2005 I neglected to mention Kim got a letter turning her down. She is depressed of course. But there are other similar openings in Lewiston and Seattle I expect she will apply for.

As I have been saying

We have won the gun control debate at the political and intellectual level. There's still lots of work to do but there are no serious obstacles in our path. The 'enemy' will continue to resist but the best they can do is mount a delaying action. Read this article for further thoughts along this line of thinking then let's get to work and politically exterminate the bigots. Some excerpts:

When the Department of Justice issues a public statement that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to own a gun, when 35 states pass nondiscretionary carry permit laws, when New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof declares that “gun control is dead,” you know the gun debate is over.

...

Here’s what gun control supporters must do to have any hope of being heard on the national level again:

Stop trying to destroy the gun culture. There are more than 250 million guns in public circulation in the U.S. They cannot be wished away. Even if the U.S. government banned gun ownership and stopped all gun manufacturing and importation, it would still need to confiscate all those weapons. Doing so would require wholesale violations of Fourth Amendment rights. The probability of getting rid of guns in America, therefore, is practically zero.

...

The ultimate goal of the anti-gun movement precludes any compromise. Gun control advocates disingenuously ridicule gun owners for fighting regulation of guns similar to what they readily accept for cars. But drivers too would adamantly oppose controls if they were promoted by people who believed that automobiles are evil instruments no decent person would want to have and that anyone who does desire them must be warped sexually, intellectually, educationally, and ethically. Car registration and driver licensing would be adamantly opposed if advocated on the ground that cars should be made increasingly unavailable to ordinary people and eventually denied to all but the military, police, and the influence peddlers and other “special” individuals whom the military or police select to receive permits.

...

Abigail Kohn clearly has come to a nuanced understanding of gun owners. That would be unremarkable for the majority of Americans who already understand gun owners (because they are, or are closely related to, gun owners). The fact that Kohn finds her understanding noteworthy is an indication of the ignorance that prevails among those who have a negative attitude toward guns, among whom I assume Kohn once counted herself. In that sense, her essay reads much like an article urging people not to fear the Jews because they don’t really drink the blood of Christian babies: Reading it makes one sad that it’s needed, but perhaps it will do some good.

...

...shooters are unlikely to consider any form of gun control: They don’t need to consider it. For the most part, at least on the national level, they now hold the winning hand. Why tinker with success?

Quote of the day--James Bovard

Gun bans in response to high crime rates mean closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. The higher the crime rate, the less right the government has to restrict or impede people's ability to defend themselves. According to gun ban advocates, government has a specific, concrete obligation to disarm each citizen, but only an abstract obligation to defend the citizen.
