At 15:24:11 GMT PUCK returned to my blog home page and stayed there for at least nine seconds until 15:24:20 GMT. I suspect they clicked on links to other web sites on my blog. I do know that in the next 30 minutes he visited two Live Journals of my daughter Xenia. Both of which (Musings of the Commando Kumquat and Free) are linked from my blog. It appears they used my blog as a 'home base' to systematically explore everything it was linked to.

New line of work?
Working at a National Laboratory can be very interesting at times and at other times boring. One of the more interesting aspects is that your work has the potential to affect world events. Because of my hobbies I have been spending some time thinking about IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and other stuff that are currently hazards to our troops. I mentioned some of my ideas to the people in the lab and word started getting around. Someone going to this meeting asked me to provide them with some background material and information. It could be my chance to get into a new line of work here at the lab. Another link of similar potential came to me this morning as well.

Busy, busy, busy
I've been incredibly busy at work. End of our fiscal year and a bunch of projects are wrapping up and I'm helping people out on their stuff as well as make sure mine is under control. Then I've been working on proposals for future funding. I had an idea for something that seemed pretty cool and then Ry came up with a very cool way to accomplish essentially the same goal and so I wrote them both up. I have been in several meetings this week and at least one last week explaining stuff to people. Everyone seems very enthusiastic about both of them so far. The details went from “Official Use Only” to “use classified computers to write it up” to “open” in the past week. Right now it is open but that might not last long. Let's just say it combines my hobbies with protecting our forces in hostile situations.
Also, I know this website has been inaccessible off and on for a week or more. Same with a bunch of others that I am the webmaster for. We had the IP address changed on us with zero advance notice and then I had the DNS screwed up for a while. It should all be straightened out now but I know that things which worked yesterday aren't working today. I suspect it's some strange caching problem but I don't know for sure. I expect it will all be cleared up by Sunday, but I just don't know for sure. But I am watching it and will attempt to fix it if things don't straighten out soon.

Technically speaking, I'm part of the “intelligence community” in this country. My involvement is very minimal and I really don't know how the reorganization recommended by the 9-11 commission would affect “our“ effectiveness from an insider viewpoint. I demostrate a computer vulnerablity that has for the most part never been exploited. This is so we can “scare them” into giving us money to develop the countermeasures to it. This was the one post they showed to me in my first contact and said was a problem. The only thing I can see wrong with it is I didn't run the spelling checker on it. If this same information and a LOT more had been in a research paper there would not have been any problem. The concern in the meeting was about us trying to scare the customer into spending money with us. This is an incorrect interpretation of the posting. The customer specifically wanted a video that would scare people into spending money to fix the vulnerability. That's what computer vulnerability demonstrations are all about. In any case I changed the posting to be the following:
